Cyperspace is a place to be safe, just like driving on the road. Here are some important things to know and follow:
- Never give out personal information, such as your real name, location, phone number or school.
- Never share your password with anyone except your parents. If someone else gets it, they might pretend to be you, give out your personal information or do an action that may get you into trouble.
- Tell the SpacePlace monitor or your parents if someone says or does something on the Internet that makes you uncomfortable, or if someone asks you for personal information.
- Choose a username that does not reflect your real identity in any way. Avoid names that are in any way sexually suggestive, even if they seem innocent to you.
What personal details does SpacePlace collect, and are they safe?
SpacePlace collects only the necessary information to enable users to play the game safely – email address to confirm, and a username. We do not use any personal or contact details for any kind of solicitation, and we do not sell any of our contact information.
Chat Safely
Participants type their own messages to other users. Every message that is typed first goes through a sophisticated filter which blocks inappropriate words and phrases. A SpacePlace filter also breaks up words and phrases phonetically in order to decipher and catch codes or other methods participants might use in an attempt to get past the system.
Conversations are monitored by the filter 24/7 to look for unacceptable words. If unacceptable words are encountered, an onscreen message will appear when the person chatting hits “submit” informing him/her that their message is inappropriate. An administrator/monitor is notified via email. The filter automatically files violation incidents as they occur. The files are accessible to the administrator or monitor at any time. Repeat violations could result in membership termination.
